2018 Programs and Field Trips

All PROGRAMS and FIELD TRIPS  are OPEN to the public at no charge. PROGRAMS are held at Trinity Lutheran Church Hall, 955 James St., Frankfort, Michigan, on James St. between 9th and 10th Streets.  FIELD TRIP locations are varied and are specified in the listing. If you are interested in attending any of these events and need more information contact Cheryl Gross 231-651-9656.

FIELD TRIP   May 2 and May 9, Wednesdays, 10 am – 12 pm       “WILDFLOWERS AT PETE’S WOODS”

                                                                     

Walk with Paula Dreeszen to see Michigan’s wildflowers  in Pete’s Woods.  Best display of woodland natives in our area.

Location:   Meet at the GTRLC Pete’s Woods trailhead parking lot, located on Swamp Rd.  From Joyfield Rd. turn south on Swamp Rd. (1 3⁄4 mi west of US 31 or 3 1⁄2 mi east of M 22)

FIELD TRIP     Monday,   May 14,  10 am -12pm    “MISTY RIDGE GREENHOUSE”

 

Visit the greenhouse with growers Paul and Jody Zemsta.  They will explain their propagation practices and have plants to sell (cash or check only, no credit or debit cards).

Location:  6171  N 11Rd, Mesick.

PROGRAM     Wednesday, May 16, 7pm   “THE STATE OF NATIVE PLANTS

Learn by example what other areas/gardens, here and abroad, are doing with native plants and managing invasive species.

FIELD TRIP       WednesdayJune 13, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.   “DUNE WILDFLOWERS AT BALDY”

                                              

Join Paula Dreezen on a 1.5 mile hike to see spectacular dune wildflowers..  Be prepared for a 1.5 mile hike through the woods.

Location: Meet at the Mt. Baldy Trailhead parking lot in Arcadia Dunes Preserve on M-22.  This parking lot is .8 miles south of Joyfield Rd.

PLANT SALE   Friday, June 15, 10am-2pm

Manistee Conservation District and Plant It Wild will host a plant sale with Vern Stephens of Designs by Nature.  This is a MCD Fund Raiser with great plants!

Location: Manistee Conservation District 8849 Chippewa Hwy, US 31, Bear Lake

PROGRAM   Wednesday, June 20, 7pm        ” POLLINATORS … “STATE OF AFFAIRS”

Carolyn Thayer will present the current findings, research, and methods to protect pollinators.  As up to 2/3 of our food requires insect pollination, it is vital to learn about this important topic.

PROGRAM         Wednesday, July 18, 7 pm      “NATIVE TREES AND SHRUBS”

 

Josh Shields, Forester, will present a program on Native Trees and Shrubs which are critical participants in our native plant communities.  Learn to transform your perennial garden into a beneficial landscape.

 FIELD TRIP FOR MEMBERS ONLY:   Saturday, July 21, 4 pm   

Visit the ‘young’ Gross/Richardson native plant gardens in Traverse City.  Less lawn, moist areas, pollinator garden, integration of trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and ground covers.

FIELD TRIP     Thursday, July 26, 1pm – 3pm  “HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SHORELINE”

Portage Lake Garden is hosting Julia Kirkwood of MDEQ Water Resources Division, Shoreline Partnership, and Shoreline Stewards.  PIW will have an educational booth.  This is an extremely important topic and native plants will be for sale.

FIELD TRIP    Saturday,  July 28, 10am-12pm

Misty Acres Preserve Hike with Josh Shields, Forester, to identify native trees and shrubs in the wild.  This GTRLC property contains many native trees and shrubs; hands-on after the 7/18 program.

PROGRAM        Wednesday, August 15, 7 pm    “INSECTS….THE GOOD AND THE BAD”

 Entomologist, Nate Walton, MSU Extension will present a program on the top beneficial bugs and the top bad guys in our environment.  learn who to leave alone…and who to go after!

PROGRAM    Wednesday, September 19  6:30 – 9  Program:   “NATIVE GRASSES

Come for a delicious potluck dinner at 6:30.  Bring your appetite, a dish to pass, your table service, and your friends. Brief business meeting.

After dinner at 7:15  Vern Stephens of Designs By Nature will share his expertise in propagating native grasses and establishing grasslands.  He will be bringing great plants for sale!
