Perennials – Partial Shade

A perennial plant is a plant that lives for more than two years. Many perennials grow and bloom over spring and summer, die back during fall and winter, and grow again the following year from their roots. This is not the case with all perennials. Some have adapted to survive the fall and winter months without dying back to their roots.

American Spikenard

Small round clusters all arising from same point. Flowers are pale greenish white to white. Late summer berries ripen and a small and tightly clustered and deep purple/cranberry.

Purple Milkweed

5 purple petals angled down and out with tips pointed up.

Whorled Milkweed

Rounded cluster of 10-20 white flowers with curved horn out of each of 5 short hoods.

White Wild Indigo

White pea shaped flowers at ends of branched stems.

White Turtlehead

Densely packed white tubular flowers with a 2 lobed hood-like upper lip.

Sand or Lance-leafed Coreopsis

Disk florets of yellow oval petals surrounding a yellow-brownish center.

Purple Prairie Clover

Thimble shaped flower with 5 petaled purple flowers with orange tipped stamens.

Queen of the Praire

Large, pink, fluffy flower heads.

Bottle Gentian

Long, tubular, with pleats between each of 5 fused blue petals. Never open and resemble large buds. A deep royal blue/purple blossom in late summer-fall.

American Alum Root

Small unremarkable blossoms. Beautiful cluster of shapely leaves. Short bell shaped green with pink/purplish tint.

Maple Leaf Alum Root

Airy spikes of creamy white bells.

Rose Mallow

Large, 5 petaled white or pink flowers with red centers.

Blue Flag Iris

Three showy, downward-curved, blue to violet petals.

Cardinal Flower

Crimson red tubular flowers, upper lip split into 2 lobes, lower into 3 lobes. A Hummingbird favorite.

Squirrel Corn

The delicate white heart-shaped flowers align along a long slender leaf-less stem.

Canada Anemone

1 to 3 long stalked flowers, 5 white petals with yellow-tipped stamens surrounding a green center.
