Perennials – Part Sun/Part Shade

A perennial is a plant that lives for more than two years. Many perennials grow and bloom during the spring and summer then die back in the fall and winter. The following year they grow back from their roots. There are a few perennials that maintain green leaves throughout the winter.

Sunlight requirements for plants is not a hard and fast rule. Our native plants can be very adaptable to sun, soil and moisture conditions. Some sun loving plants can grow well in partial shade but may have fewer blossoms. Soil quality and moisture availability also plays a role.

Traditionally the terms Part Sun and Part Shade indicate a plant needs 4- 6 hours of sunlight.
