Perennials – Partial Sun

A perennial plant is a plant that lives for more than two years. Many perennials grow and bloom over spring and summer, die back during fall and winter, and grow again the following year from their roots. This is not the case with all perennials. Some have adapted to survive the fall and winter months without dying back to their roots.

White Baneberry, Doll’s Eyes

White flowers, forming a round or cylindrical cluster.

Red Baneberry

White flower, usually one on a plant.

Yellow Giant Hyssop

Yellow to green flowers densely crowded on a tall spike. All flowers do not bloom together, but continue for 1-2 months.

Rue Anemone

Flowers are white usually with 5 petals, but can have up to 10. Each flower appears on its own stem in clusters.

Jack-in-the-Pulpit

Flower is tubular and is large, cylindrical, and hooded, green in color with brown stripes.

Blue Cohosh

Inconspicuous flowers can be purplish green and form a loose cluster. These produce the beautiful deep blue berries.

Bluebead Lily

Yellow flowers with six petals in clusters of 3-8 droop at the top of the flower stalk. Will form deep blue berries.

Bunchberry

Tiny greenish to creamy white stalked flowers in the center of four large white bracts that look like petals. Bracts are broadly oval.

Large Yellow Lady’s Slipper

Flower is a yellow, irregular pouch about 2 inches long. The rim of the mouth or upper part of the pouch as red spots of striped. Side petals are thin and typically twisted. Typically one flower per plant, and occasionally two.

Dutchman’s Breeches

A single naked flower stalk with a row of bobbing white, V-shaped flowers that look like white pants on a clothesline.

Yellow Trout Lily

A yellow flower with six petals that curve back on themselves and six bronze or orange stamens.

Wintergreen

Nodding white bell shaped flowers appear in June or July and yield bright red berries.

Golden Seal

The flower is white and has not petals, the stamens around the pistil are white. The flowers ripen in summer to small, fleshy raspberry-like seeds with one to two shiny, black seeds.

Twinleaf

The white flower of the Twinleaf is about an inch wide with four dedptals and eight petals atop a leafless stalk. The fruit is a large, dry, pear-shaped capsule with a tiny hinged lid.

Wood Lily

The deep orange blossom is a standout with purple spots. The plant can produce 1-5 funnel-shaped flowers on an erect stem.

Virginia Bluebells

Pink buds open into beautiful, blue, 1 inch long, trumpet shaped flowers. Massed they are stunning.

Woodland Phlox

Flat clusters of pale blue flowers. Individual flowers 1" wide are made of 5 petals fused together at the base into a tube.

Mayapple

One white to rose colored flower blooms between the leaves and has 6-9 waxy petals. The flower produces a large, fleshy, lemon-shaped berry.

Solomon Seal

Flowers are whitish green and hang in pairs along the underside of the stem. They are tubular bell-shaped flowers. Blue berries follow the flowers. The flowers and berries attract butterflies and birds.

Downy or Hairy Solomon’s Seal

False Solomon’s Seal/False Spikinard

Plume-like cluster of 70-80 star-like clusters of white flowers at the end of the leafy stem. Ripens into a red berry.

Starry False Solomon’s Seal

Plume-like cluster of up to 20 star-like clusters of white flowers. Blowers produce berries that begin as greenish with purple stripes and turn purple as the ripen.

Tall Meadow Rue

Flowers are small, delicate and are creamy green, in flower they look like small lanterns dangling above the leaves.

Wild Columbine

Flowers are reddish with yellow centers which hang or nod at the end of a slender stem. The flower is made up of 5 upside down tubes that form a bell. The spurs are filled with nectar. A delicate flower in the spring/early summer garden and a favorite of humming birds. Happily self-seeds.

Alumroot

Tiny, greenish-white, bell-shaped flowers in open airy panicles are borne on slender, wiry stems.

Wild Geranium

Small clusters of a few flowers each branching off the top of the plant. Flowers are 1 to 1 1/2" across, 5 rounded pink to lavender petals and 10 stamens with yellow tips that turn brown with age.

Early Meadow Rue

Petal-less flowers have yellow stamens that hang like tiny tassels. Plants are sexed with purple female blossoms and male greenish white blossoms.

Wild Ginger

Flower appears near the soil in the crotch between two leaf stems. It is typically a reddish brown color.

Harebell

Bell-shaped blue flowers, 3/4" long, each formed from 5 fused petals nodding from a thin stem.

Large-flowered Trillium

Each flower has three flaring, ovate, white petals. Flowers produce berry like capsules that are dispersed by ants.

Light blue flowers on slender stalks in open clusters at the end of stems arising from leaf axils in the upper part of the plant.
